Over 2022 and 2023, Axo Copper acquired rights to two concessions which total roughly 11,300 hectares which make up the La Huerta project. The project is within the prolific Sierra Madre belt and located in Jalisco state in southwest Mexico. La Huerta is located near excellent infrastructure, and is accessed via highway and roads from the major port city of Monzanillo – a shipping hub used by nearby iron ore mines. The project is accessible year-round for exploration.
Prior to Axo Copper's ownership, small scale surface mining operations took place at La Huerta, predominantly focused in an area called ‘Las Marias' along the La Huerta trend. The mineralization comes in the form of a high-grade copper dyke within the andesite host rock, within a zone of significant alteration. The zone is steeply dipping, begins at surface, and has seen very limited exploration or drilling activity, particularly at depth. The structure has been traced for several kilometres, and has a NE-SW strike direction.
Figure 3 shows the La Huerta structure as seen from the base of the small Las Maria pit (~50m below surface). Axo Copper sampled the face at 9.4m grading 4.4% copper, with a subsection of 3.2m grading 21.4% copper. Copper mineralization hosted is within chalcopyrite and bornite.
Drilling thus far has been concentrated within one kilometre of Las Marias (Figure 4 below). Drilling results have come from a combination of prior concession holders, and Axo Copper's maiden exploration program which begun in 2023. Prior drilling results (with core re-assayed by Axo) include highlights of 6.63% copper over 9.5 metres (hole G-008) and 5.03% copper over 13.7 metres (hole C-001). Axo Copper's 2023 drilling followed upon this success with highlights of 7.37% Cu over 7.6 metres (LHCC-23-023) and 5.87% copper over 8.9 metres (LHCC-23-022).
Numerus other targets along trend have seen very limited, yet encouraging exploration results (Punto Cornelio, Punto 3, Punto 4, El Aguila), which Axo Copper plans to follow up on.
